ORGANIC COMPOST
What is composting?
Composting is the process of transforming organic waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment known as compost.
Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic material, such as food scraps and garden waste, into a dark, crumbly substance that can be used to improve soil quality and nourish plants. Compost is created when microorganisms break down organic matter, producing nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that are essential for plant growth.
Why should I compost?
Composting is a great way to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.
Composting helps reduce the need for chemical fertilisers, making your garden healthier. Compost also helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing the need for watering. In addition, it reduces methane emissions from landfill and decreases the amount of organic waste that gets incinerated.
Composting is an easy and green way to reduce your environmental footprint while creating a healthier and more sustainable garden.
What can I put in my compost bin?
To make compost at home, you’ll need to put the correct items into your compost bin.
You can add organic materials such as kitchen scraps like vegetable peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, and fruit rinds.
Other items that can be added to your compost bin include grass clippings, leaves, shredded newspaper, sawdust, straw, and animal manure (from vegetarian animals only).
Remember not to add meat or dairy products, pet waste, plastic, or glass to your compost bin. (You can add these items to Hot Composters)
By adding these materials to your compost bin, you can create nutrient-rich soil for your garden!
What do I do with my finished compost?
Once you’ve collected and composted your kitchen scraps, garden waste, and other organic materials, you will have a rich, dark soil-like material known as compost.
Compost is an excellent additive to gardens and flower beds and can enrich and improve soil fertility. You can use it as mulch around trees and shrubs or apply it directly to the soil in raised beds or around plants.
Compost helps retain moisture and keeps soil temperature stable. It also provides vital nutrients that are beneficial to plant growth.
Compost can also be used in potting mixes to provide a nutrient-rich environment for houseplants.
Lastly, compost can be used as a soil amendment or conditioner. By mixing compost into the soil, it will help to improve the structure and fertility of the soil.
